Former Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman signs new contract as Cincinnati defensive coordinator

Former Ohio State linebacker and current Cincinnati defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman had reportedly received a raise.

Another former Ohio State player is making moves in the coaching profession. You remember him as an athletic linebacker that could roam from sideline to sideline under Jim Tressel. He had speed, instincts, and athleticism during his time in Columbus from 2004-2008.

Since then, he’s taken on a career in the coaching profession with stops at Kent State and Purdue before joining another former Ohio State coach and player, Luke Fickell, at Cincinnati as the defensive coordinator.

Since then, the duo has turned the Bearcats into one of the best-performing Group of Five programs over the last couple of years, with things still trending up. It’s a balanced team, but the defense has been a big part of the transformation.

And now, for all of his efforts, Freeman has reportedly received a new two-year contract that ups his pay to $600,000 in the first year. The news was first reported by Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports.

Keep an eye on Freeman. His name has been hot in many coaching circles and it’ll be increasingly hard to keep him on staff in Cincinnati if the success continues.
