Matt Cassel, who played for seven different NFL franchises from 2005-2018 recently ranked all 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL from the 2022 season. While he has Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles at No. 2 and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins at No. 14, the third former Alabama quarterback was far down the list.
The New England Patriots‘ Mac Jones ranks No. 25 of 32, according to Cassel, who once played for the Patriots himself at the very start of his professional career.
“There were a lot of ups and downs for Mac Jones this past season. I’m still unsure of what type of quarterback he can be. But we will certainly find out with new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien returning to the New England Patriots this season.”
Jones finished the 2022 regular season with a 65.2% completion percentage, 2,997 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. These numbers are very underwhelming when compared to the stats from his rookie season.
There are now rumblings that the decision-makers within the franchise aren’t Jones’ biggest fans. Last season, rookie Bailey Zappe appeared to be a fan favorite and was certainly up for the challenge when he stood in for Jones while he was recovering from a sprained ankle.
Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Mac Jones and other former Alabama players in the NFL as the 2023 offseason progresses.
