Former LSU tight end Arik Gilbert enters transfer portal again

Former five-star Arik Gilbert is back in the transfer portal

A former LSU tight end is back in the transfer portal.

[autotag]Arik Gilbert[/autotag], who signed with LSU in 2020 before hitting the portal after one season, put his name in the hat on Tuesday.

Gilbert arrived at LSU with a ton of hype. He was the consensus No. 1 ranked TE in the country and a top 10 overall recruit. Some considered him a generational athlete at the position.

As a freshman in 2020, Gilbert caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns. He looked like a future star, but before the season was over, Gilbert stepped away from the team and entered the portal.

Gilbert transferred to Georgia and sat out in 2021. He saw the field briefly in 2022, catching two passes for 16 yards as a member of UGA’s national title team.

Gilbert entered the portal after the 2022 season and landed at Nebraska. He ran into off-the-field trouble and did not play in 2023.

Back in the portal again, Gilbert will try to find a new home.

We haven’t seen Gilbert play in two years, but if he still has talent anywhere close to what he had in 2020, he can be a good player somewhere.

It’s still not exactly clear what went wrong with Gilbert and LSU, but he remains one of the biggest “what-ifs?” in LSU history.
