Former LSU women’s basketball point guard Hailey Van Lith made history for herself and her new team on Sunday.
Van Lith, who plays for TCU, posted a double-double with assists for the first time in her career in the Frogs’ upset of No. 13 NC State.
The graduate student finished with 18 points and 10 assists. She was overcome with emotions following the game when head coach Mark Campbell read her stat line.
During the post-game press conference, Van Lith said she is “transforming into a new player” focused more on helping all players score in addition to herself.
The assist total is notable as Van Lith struggled with the transition from being a pure scorer at Louisville to a ball handler at LSU.
In the offseason, Van Lith’s departure from LSU made headlines as she entered the transfer portal for the second time in her career.
Following the Tigers’ Elite Eight exit in the NCAA tournament, head coach Kim Mulkey shared her thoughts on the guard’s decision.
“Her aspirations were to get drafted this year and she realized, ‘I need another year and I need to go back to a place where I can relax and get back to my normal position,'” Mulkey said. “And what do you do? You hug her and you wish her well.”
