There will be plenty of Texas ties when Austin Westlake takes on Southlake Carroll in the Texas 6A Division 1 state championship game on Saturday.
The two quarterbacks looking to lead their teams to a state championship each have an offer from the Longhorns. For the Dragons, it’s former Texas commit Quinn Ewers leading the pack. The No. 1 recruit in the 2022 class flipped his verbal commitment to Ohio State last November.
For Austin Westlake, Cade Klubnik is under center. The four-star pro style quarterback holds offers from Arizona State, Auburn and Georgia. Former Texas head coach Mack Brown, who’s now with North Carolina, joined the running for Klubnik alongside the Longhorns. However, those aren’t the only Texas ties in this game.
Klubnik’s head coach Todd Dodge is a former Texas quarterback. Two seasons after his playing career ended, Dodge began coaching high school football. One of his tenures was at Southlake Carroll, where he won several state championships. One of those titles happened to be with his son Riley Dodge as the quarterback.
Riley has his own ties to the Longhorns as he spent 2013-14 as the quarterbacks coach for the burnt orange. Now the two will face off in the state championship game.
