Just as the Iowa Hawkeyes are adding through the portal at the quarterback position, their former quarterbacks are finding new homes.
Former Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Marco Lainez entered the transfer portal at the end of the 2024 regular season and has found his new home.
Lainez confirmed via his X account, along with a post from the program itself, that he will be headed to Elon.

Marco Lainez’s decision to transfer came after spending two seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes but seeing only minor playing time as the third-string quarterback.
His lone appearance for Iowa came following the 2023 season when he entered the Citrus Bowl in mop-up duty. He completed 2-7 passes for four yards to go with 51 rushing yards on six carries.
Lainez was sidelined for part of the 2024 season as he suffered a broken hand in practice late in the season that essentially sidelined him for the remainder of the year.
Marco Lainez attended Hun School and was a product of Skillman, New Jersey before he made his way to Iowa City.
Coming out of high school, Lainez was the No. 45 quarterback and a three-star recruit, per the 247Sports Composite ranking.
Marco Lainez joins the Elon Phoenix, who were 6-6 last year overall and 5-3 in the Coastal Athletic Association Conference.
