After a lengthy wait and abnormal battle, Lincoln Riley finally announced his starting quarterback for the 2020 season: redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler.
Riley made the announcement via zoom press conference on tuesday. Rattler beat out redshirt sophomore Tanner Mordecai.
Rattler appeared in three games last season, going 7-11 for 81 yards and a touchdown.
He came out of high school as a five-star prospect, the top player out of Arizona and the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2019.
Much speculation has been made about this decision, which comes less than two weeks from the start of the 2020 season. Rattler was the likely favorite from the start, and Riley revealed today that Mordecai missed 70-75 percent of camp.
Riley has a history of waiting until the last minute to announce his starting quarterback. His announcements that Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts would be starting both came in late August.
