Steve Wilks, who was the Arizona Cardinals’ head coach for only one season in 2018 and was not in football during the 2020 season, is up for a job among the collegiate ranks. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he has emerged as one of three candidates to be defensive coordinator for the Missouri Tigers.
Wilks, as Cardinals fans will remember, was the head coach for Arizona’s fateful 3-13 season. It was one of the worst seasons and they struggled mightily both offensively and defensively. He was fired after only one season and, having originally signed a four-year contract, still has one more year of getting paid by the Cardinals.
After he was let go by the Cardinals, he was defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns for one season. When Freddie Kitchens was fired as head coach after the 2019 season, Wilks and the staff was also let go.
Wilks has been in the NFL since 2006, going from a position coach to defensive coordinator and assistant head coach before his stint with the Cardinals and Browns.
Wilks previously had coached in the college ranks from 1994-2005.
While his year with the Cardinals was not good, even upon his departure, he was universally respected by everyone in the building for how hard he worked.
It is good to see him with a chance to get back into the game.
