Former Buffs safety Maurice Henriques talks rejuvenation of Colorado football

Former #cubuffs safety Maurice Henriques is appreciative of the energy that Deion Sanders has brought back to Boulder

Along with bringing new life into Colorado’s fan base, the arrival of head coach Deion Sanders has also excited former Buffs players, including those who helped bring winning football to Boulder in the 1990s.

Recently, I caught up with Maurice Henriques, a safety at CU from 1993-96 who currently heads one of the state’s most dominant track and field programs at Niwot High School, located about 10 miles northeast of Boulder. Henriques praised Sanders’ confident mentality and what he has done for the program ahead of his first season.

“I love the energy that Deion Sanders is bringing. It’s like, ‘Hey, we’re going to win again here,'” Henriques said.

The energy that Henriques mentioned reminds him of when his then-No. 13 Buffs hosted No. 3 Miami in 1993. Colorado did lose that game, but there’s now hope that Folsom Field can soon host matchups of that magnitude again.

“I love it because I played in the 90s. I just watched the whole game that I was in when we played Miami in ’93. Warren Sapp was in the game, Ray Lewis was a freshman starting… The stadium was rocking, so it’s cool to see that excitement back.”

Henriques, who once tore his labrum attempting to tackle Rashaan Salaam, added that he stays in touch with many of his teammates from that era, including Matt Russell, Chris Naeole and Greg Jones.
