The start of a post-athletic career can be difficult on a player – college or pro alike. A life absent of the camaraderie and competitiveness of sports can make it feel like something is missing, with not much able to fill that void.
Earlier this year, Josh Jynes was about to begin his life post-football.
The former Colorado center opted to end his career in January because of injuries but when he informed Karl Dorrell of his retirement, the Buffs’ former head coach offered him the opportunity to stick around as a student assistant (h/t BuffStampede’s Adam Munsterteiger).
“I talked to my dad about it and he was like, ‘Why not?’ I didn’t want to be in a regular office for the rest of my life. I want to be around this, where the energy is high and I can feel the emotion. That is what football does for me. After thinking about it, I could start at a Power 5, so I took the opportunity.”
So thus began the coaching career of Jynes. The mundanity of a regular office job has been avoided — at least for now — with the rush of being around a football program as its replacement.
His days as a student assistant are now filled with inputting data and doing whatever job is asked of him.
Jynes has enjoyed his post-football life thus far but understands that in the coaching profession, job security is never a guarantee (h/t BuffStampede’s Adam Munsterteiger).
“It is a job with no job security. A lot of things can change, which we’ve seen this year with Coach Dorrell. I have had a great time at CU. I met a lot of people I love, a lot of friends, close relationships with coaches. I met a lot of people that I will be friends with for my lifetime. I have no complaints about my time here. I love Boulder. I call Boulder home. Wherever life takes me, I am pretty sure I’ll end up back here.”
Time will tell where he ends up, as jobs can end in an instant, but opportunity gone at one place can also create new experiences elsewhere.
Even though one chapter of Jynes’ life is over, this current one is off to a good start in the city he calls home.
