Former Broncos G Dalton Risner named free-agent option for Panthers

Should the Panthers give free-agent guard Dalton Risner a call?

The Carolina Panthers currently have a spot open on their active roster. So, how should they fill it?

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine recently named the best remaining free-agent option for every NFL team. For the Panthers, he highlights former Denver Broncos guard Dalton Risner—who could patch up the interior of the offensive line.

Ballentine writes:

Based on the preseason, the Carolina Panthers offense could be better than expected if they can keep Bryce Young upright. The No. 1 overall pick showed strong processing, accuracy and command of the offense during the preseason when he wasn’t immediately bombarded with pressure.

That bombardment almost marred what was otherwise a pretty impressive string of exhibition play from the rookie quarterback. Per Pro Football Focus, Young was pressured on 11 of his 31 dropbacks during the preseason.

As of now, head coach Frank Reich has yet to officially name the team’s temporary replacement for starting right guard Austin Corbett—who will begin the season on the reserve/PUP list.

And if rookie Chandler Zavala or second-year hog molly Cade Mays isn’t enough, perhaps Risner—who has played and started in 62 games over the past four seasons—would suffice. Ballentine adds:

Risner has been looking for a home all offseason, but he was a consistent starter for the Denver Broncos over the last four seasons. He would provide a higher floor for the Panthers’ group of guards this season.
