A Cincinnati Bengals reunion with Andrew Whitworth was never likely and the idea fully got the ax this week as the veteran tackle signed a big extension with the Los Angeles Rams.
The contract, worth up to $37.5 million, is historic as the biggest paid to a non-quarterback over the age of 35.
As such, Whitworth figures to end his prestigious career with the Rams.
Bridges repaired or not, Cincinnati probably wouldn’t have been interested in such a deal given the circumstances. The Bengals have first-round pick Jonah Williams coming back to play left tackle and there’s no indication Whitworth would’ve been comfortable kicking inside to guard.
Still, the theory of a reunion popped up more than a few times as letting Whitworth go at all is still one of the biggest mishaps that put the Bengals in their current predicament.
