The split between the Cincinnati Bengals and Carlos Dunlap this past season was an ugly one.
Dunlap eventually ended up traded to the Seattle Seahawks, forcing his way out of town after a lesser role with a new coaching staff resulted in drama like a playbook posted online and the defensive end announcing his house was for sale.
Appearing on a CBS Sports radio show Friday, Dunlap explained why he posted the team’s depth chart to social media:
“That was just me letting the fans know the depth chart update that was given to me because it wasn’t on Bengals.com. I showed it to them the same way that I got it.”
But Dunlap says that wasn’t the final straw for his time in Cincinnati — the posting of his house online was the first time he realized he “would no longer wear black and orange.”
Still, Dunlap remains adamant it all came from a place of his wanting to help the team and knowing he could (he posted five sacks in seven games with Seattle).
Dunlap also mentioned he’d like to one day make it back to Cincinnati, potentially for a spot in a yet-to-exist Ring of Honor. And while he wouldn’t comment on the current coaching staff, he says Joe Burrow “is definitely going to be the future of the NFL.”
Dunlap had previously penned a letter to fans revealing he had considered retirement midseason due to the situation.
