Former Auburn QB finds new home at ACC school

Will the fourth time be the charm for Robbie Ashford?

Will the fourth time be the charm?

[autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag], who played two seasons at Auburn from 2022-23, announced last weekend that he will transfer to Wake Forest for the 2025 season. His announcement comes after spending one season at South Carolina.

Ashford participated in eight games for the Gamecocks this season, making one start. In his lone start against Akron, Ashford completed 15-of-21 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Ashford added 133 yards and a score on 16 carries. He ended the season with 324 passing yards and 227 rushing yards with four total touchdowns.

The Hoover native departs South Carolina after failing to beat out Lanorris Sellers for the starting quarterback role. Ashford gets a new start at Wake Forest for newly-named head coach Jake Dickert. Ashford will now enter a quarterback competition in Winston-Salem following the departure of 2024 starting quarterback Hank Bachmeier, who passed for 2,593 yards and 15 touchdowns last season.

The fit between Ashford and Dickert appears to be favorable. Over the last three seasons as head coach at Washington State, quarterbacks Cam Ward and John Mateer have passed for over 3,000 yards and a minimum of 23 touchdowns. In 2024, Mateer passed for 3,139 yards and led the Cougars in rushing with 826 yards. Could 2025 be the year that Ashford puts his dual-threat abilities on full display?
