Before taking over NC State in 2000, Chuck Amato spent nearly two decades on Bobby Bowden’s staff at Florida State, helping the Seminoles to eight straight ACC championships from 1992-1999.
The two shared their final goodbyes to each other Sunday night in a phone call that Amato described to The Fayetteville Observer:
Bowden, though, had one request when the two spoke over the phone Sunday evening.
“I know you’re an emotional guy,” Bowden said, jokingly. “Don’t start crying on me.”
Amato laughed.
“Coach, I started crying 15 minutes ago.”
Amato added that the two spoke for nearly an hour but never discussed Bowden’s medical condition but instead focused on the great memories they shared coaching together and against each other as they squared off seven times during Amato’s tenure at NC State.
