Former Alabama safety and sideline reporter Rashad Johnson was hired as a full-time defensive assistant by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday. This will be the first coaching opportunity of his career.
Johnson signed with Alabama as a walk-on out of Sulligent High School in Sulligent, Alabama. His only scholarship offers were from Citadel and North Alabama. During his freshman season, he played in 12 games primarily on special teams. As a sophomore, he started in four games at safety for the Crimson Tide. From there, he would go on to become a two-time First-team All-SEC member and won the Mal Moore Leadership Award following his senior season.
He was selected in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson went on to spend seven seasons with the organization. He recorded 346 tackles and six tackles for loss. After his tenure with the Cardinals, he spent one season with the Tennessee Titans.
There, he tallied 38 tackles in the seven games that he played. Johnson announced his retirement from the NFL on January 3, 2018. He would then go on to be a sideline reporter at Alabama for the past four years. Now, he will join the Buccaneers staff in his first assistant coaching role.
