In 2016, Trevon Diggs, the brother of star NFL receiver Stefon Diggs, began his collegiate career at the University of Alabama after being rated as a four-star prospect coming out of high school.
Fast forward to four years later, and Diggs is a name being thrown around as a defensive back who could be drafted in the first or second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
While at Alabama, Diggs totaled 68 tackles, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a memorable 100-yard defensive touchdown against Tennessee.
These numbers aren’t jaw-dropping, but they are certainly respectable enough to convince a NFL team in need of secondary help that Diggs is worth taking a shot on.
During his sophomore season, Diggs made the full-time switch from wide receiver to cornerback, a difficult, yet respectable achievement for a young player to have to make a switch at such a high level.
Diggs is listed at No. 4 in CBS Sports‘ positional rankings for corner backs and is ranked as the No. 25 overall best prospect in the 2020 NFL Draft class.
Yahoo Sports’ Eric Edholm highlighted Diggs’ abilities:
“Converted WR who possesses ball skills. He turned in a few nice INTs, plus a scoop and score. He has an innate understanding of route combinations. Short-area quickness is solid for his size. Diggs also has nice burst to close fast on in-breaking routes. Read-and-react skills look more polished on short and intermediate routes.”
Clearly the Alabama product is good enough to be considered by NFL teams, but which team needs Diggs the most?
The short answer, the Denver Broncos.
The Broncos acted quickly once the 2020 NFL offseason got started by trading a fourth-round pick to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for 2017 ProBowl defensive back, A.J. Bouye.
While the addition of Bouye is certainly a step in the right direction, it’s not enough to completely change a defense which only accumulated 10 interception in 2019.
Phillip Heilman, writer for the Denver Post, believes that Diggs should be in the Broncos’ crosshairs when it comes to round No. 2.
“In the right situation, he has the talent to develop into a dependable starting cornerback early in his career. If necessary, Diggs could also transition to free safety at some point due to his size and instincts. It might feel a touch early to take Diggs at No. 15, but it’s difficult to imagine a player with his upside remaining on the board when the Broncos pick a second time.”
Heilman isn’t alone in his assessment of Diggs being a good fit for the mile-high team. Cecil Lammey of Denver’s 104.3 The Fan argues that Diggs is such a big presence that there is not a player on the field that will “out physical” him.
The Diggs to Denver fit seems ideal, but the Broncos are in need of a wide receiver, which they will likely use their No. 15 overall pick on. The real question now is if Diggs will be present when it comes time for them to pick in round No. 2.
Mock drafts have had Diggs all over the place. He’s been as high as No. 13 overall to not being in the first two rounds at all.
