The Big Ten made huge news last week, when reports surfaced that among potential start dates, Thanksgiving was being considered, along with winter or spring starts.

However, former ESPN personality and radio host Dan Patrick — who was pretty spot on in advance of the conference postponing the fall season days before it came to fruition — has revealed an even earlier potential.

How does October sound?

According to Patrick, the Big Ten is potentially targeting Oct. 10 as a new start date to the season, depending heavily on new testing capabilities that have come to the forefront since the conference’s decision to postpone. While the word ‘if’ is still the big factor here, there’s at least a possibility that football could be played in the Midwest’s premier conference this fall.

The question is: who is Patrick’s source? If it’s merely a coach or athletic director, it could just be wishful thinking at this juncture. If it’s a Big Ten president who has knowledge of others’ thinking, and it’s actually something that’s been discussed, then it may actually be a possibility.

Either way, we’re not holding our breath here.
