Florida QB commit impressed with Wisconsin transfer Graham Mertz

Florida quarterback commit DJ Lagway returned to the Swamp this weekend and stayed for the first day of training camp.

Billy Napier hasn’t named a starting quarterback for the 2023 season yet, but five-star commit DJ Lagway might be partial to Wisconsin transfer [autotag]Graham Mertz[/autotag] after a recent trip to the Swamp.

Lagway was in town over the weekend for Florida’s Grill in the Ville cookout, and he extended his trip to observe the first day of training camp along with the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2024, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.

Naturally, Lagway spent plenty of time watching the quarterbacks. Mertz is the expected No. 1 with Jack Miller III and Max Brown fighting for the backup spot. The competitive atmosphere appealed to Lagway, and he trusts the plan that Napier has laid out.

“Graham Mertz, he had a really good day,” Lagway said to Gators Online. “He made some good throws on-platform and off-platform. I think he’s got a really good arm. I’m really excited to see him play. I hope he has a good season.”

A strong season on offense could help get Smith on board, which is something Lagway has been working on for a while. Although Smith is committed to Ohio State, there’s a growing feeling that he could be open to a flip.

Lagway is ranked No. 30 overall on the On3 industry ranking, which uses a weighted average of all four major recruiting services. He’s also the third-best quarterback in the class of 2024 and the No. 8 player out of Texas.
