Florida football’s captains for Tennessee Volunteers game announced

Here are the four team captains for the Gators when they host the Vols Saturday evening.

Florida football welcomes the Tennessee Volunteers to Gainesville as the two programs open up their respective Southeastern Conference schedules during Week 3. The game represents a pivotal point in both schools’ seasons in the final fall of division play in the SEC.

On Friday, the Gators announced their four team captains for Saturday night’s affair. Quarterback Graham Mertz, along with center Kingsley Eguakun, linebacker Shemar James and defensive back Jaydon Hill all got the call for the weekly honor.

Mertz has amassed 526 passing yards in his first two career games with the Orange and Blue, ranking second in program history behind Shane Matthews’ 599 in 1990. Eguakun is returning from the injured list after missing the first two games, while James is the highest-graded linebacker in the SEC with an 85.5, according to Pro Football Focus.

Hill ranks third among all Florida players in tackles with six.

The Gators host the Volunteers in the Swamp on Saturday, Sept. 16, for the SEC schedule opener between two historic rivals. The opening kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and the game can be watched on ESPN.
