Florida football edge Jack Pyburn to enter NCAA transfer portal

Gators EDGE Jack Pyburn announces entry into the NCAA transfer portal.

In a notable development for the Florida football program, edge defender Jack Pyburn announced his intention to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

He shared his decision with On3 Sports on Tuesday, signaling a significant shift for the Gators’ defensive lineup.

Pyburn, a key figure in Florida’s defense, has opted to explore his options. This announcement comes after a season in which he made noticeable contributions and improvements on the field, marked by his aggressive play style and ability to disrupt opposing offenses.

The 6-foot-3-inch, 265-pound junior played in every game and had 60 tackles (20 solo), four tackles for a loss, one sack and an interception.

The decision to enter the transfer portal is significant for Pyburn, who has been with the Gators since 2022 and has experienced the various phases and the ups and downs of this team.

The Gators are set to face challenges in filling the void left by these departures, however, they have promising talent waiting in the wings.

Florida’s options at edge

This offseason, Pyburn marks the fifth edge defender to exit the program, joining Justus Boone, Kelby Collins, Quincy Ivory and walk-on Bryce Capers. Despite Boone’s departure, Tyreak Sapp still has a year of eligibility left, potentially indicating plans to return.

Should Sapp and Boone both leave, George Gumbs Jr., a transfer from Northern Illinois, who played a crucial role on Florida’s defensive line this year, along with several eager young players, would likely fill the void.

Kamran James, LJ McCray and TJ Searcy are expected to stay, unless they decide to transfer. Additionally, four-star recruit Jayden Woods will join the defensive room this spring. The only scholarship loss from this group through graduation is specialist Ja’Markis Weston. Walk-on Tyreik Norwood also concluded his eligibility.

Eligible for further play, walk-ons Titus Bullard, Charles Emanuel III and Layne Swafford are set to continue with the team.
