Florida has hired USF cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator Jules Montinar to fill one of its staff vacancies in the secondary, according to multiple reports. The hire was first reported by Football Scoop.
A young coach with SEC experience, Montinar was a defensive quality control assistant at Georgia in 2019 prior to his one year serving under coach Jeff Scott in Tampa. Before joining Kirby Smart’s staff, he was a cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator at Texas State from 2016-18.
In that role, he was known as one of the Sun Belt’s best recruiters. So, he has experience recruiting in the southeast, albeit at the Group of Five level.
He previously worked under coach Nick Saban and Smart at Alabama as a graduate assistant focusing on the defensive side of the ball. As an added boost, Montinar is a Naples native, so he has some familiarity with the state.
Florida fired cornerbacks coach Torrian Gray and safeties coach Ron English following the season, and they’ve already filled one of those vacancies with former Auburn assistant Wesley McGriff. It’s unclear who will coach corners and who will coach safeties, as no roles have been announced for either assistant.
