Florida baseball earns commitment from JUCO infielder

The Florida Gators lost both of its starters on the left side of the infield to the 2023 MLB draft, but Kevin O’Sullivan is bringing in more talent to reload for next season.

The Florida Gators baseball team needed to add another infielder to the roster, and Kevin O’Sullivan turned to the junior college ranks to land a commitment from Gulf Coast State College infielder/right-handed pitcher [autotag]Landon Russell[/autotag].

Although he exclusively played second base in the field for the Commodores, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Russell compete for time on the left side of the infield. The Gators need replacements for Colby Halter and Josh Rivera, and Cade Kurland should stay at second base.

Before Russell’s commitment, Florida had just Alabama transfer Colby Shelton to rely on for one of the two spots. Deric Fabian’s transfer to Auburn left Florida with Dale Thomas at third and incoming freshman John Martinez as other infield options, but Russell adds another potential name to the group.

As a freshman, Russell typically hit sixth or seventh in the order, but he still slashed .305/.414/.497 with three triples and six home runs. His strikeouts were a bit high at 40 over 181 plate appearances compared to 24 walks, but that’s not a disqualifying factor for a talented player.

Experience against the SEC might make Thomas the favorite to win the job at third, but Russell could easily work his way into some consistent playing time. Russell won’t be eligible for the draft until 2025.
