Florida football took its second loss of the season on Saturday against the Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington, 20-13, in a game that fit in perfectly the madness that has long been the UF-UK series. Now in the aftermath of the disappointing defeat, the national sports media has come out with its takes from the results.
USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg published his winners and losers article on Sunday morning as the dust settled from Week 5, lauding those who excelled and looking at th aftermath for those who failed.
Here is what Myerberg had to say about the Gators.
The loss to Kentucky erases any of the good vibes coming out of last month’s close loss to Alabama and makes it borderline impossible to imagine Florida getting back to the SEC championship game. It also places Dan Mullen in ignominious company: Mullen is the first UF coach since Doug Dickey (1970-78) to lose more than once to the Wildcats.
Quite frankly, he hit the nail squarely on the head here. The loss evaporated any significant postseason aspirations and also bestowed the ignominious distinction upon Florida’s head coach as the first skipper in decades to lose more than once to Kentucky. However, a win over Georgia could salvage the season — even if it is only in the capacity of playing the spoiler — because beating the ‘Dawgs means more than almost anything in the Gator Nation.
