We just concluded a countdown of the Top Five Moments from the Falcon’s 2019 football season. In case you missed this series, you can catch up on all five here;  Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 , Part 4 and Part 5 .

When you have the kind of success that Air Force did this season, it’s not too difficult to recall five fond memories that helped shape the year. Conversely, you are going to have to be pretty picky to showcase as many forgettable moments.

However, that is exactly what we are going to do here. We already covered the fifth most forgettable moment from the 2019 season here.

Air Force loses their beloved mascot of 23 years, Aurora.

Mascots are often part of long standing traditions at many Universities, and nearly every school boasts one. As traditional as having a mascot may be, so too is the ceremonial retiring of a live one, as a new trademark to the institution is thrust into the spotlight.

Unfortunately, Air Force had to move on from Aurora, their rare, white-phase Gyrfalcon who served as the teams mascot for two decades this past October. Even after a prank in 2018, which Aurora was taken by some Army cadets saw her injured, and not certain to recover; she was thankfully able to heal and return for the start of the 2019 campaign.

Aurora was the rarest of Falcon’s in many sense of the word. Only three percent of falcons are Gryfalcon, and of those, only one percent are actually white. In the Academies 65 year history, she was the longest serving mascot. Again, rare in many regards.

In honor of Aurora, Air Force hosted a ‘white-out’ game on October 26th against Utah State. For this home game, those in attendance were clad in white. And while motivation never seemed to be an issue for this years Falcons, it seemed especially evident this night as Air Force throttled Utah State 31- 7.
