With the head coach job opening up at Texas A&M, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum suggested on Monday that Dabo Swinney could leave Clemson to take over the Aggies.
Speaking on his daily radio show, “The Paul Finebaum Show,” on Monday, Finebaum proposed the idea to his listeners and watchers.
“What about Dabo Swinney to Texas A&M? The credentials are there,” Finebaum said.
With Clemson’s struggles in recent years, Finebaum thinks Swinney is getting tired of the criticism and would be a good fit for the Aggies.
“Does he fit? Absolutely. Dabo Swinney aligns very well, from a cultural standpoint, with Texas A&M. Would he leave Clemson? I think he would. They’re kind of sick of him, and I think he’s sick of them. And before some ‘Clemsonite’ comes out of his basement and starts telling me how wrong I am, after a while, that happens. Happens to every coach, usually. And there are few exceptions. Nick Saban, pretty good exception after 17 years. But I think Dabo would be reenergized. I think he would be able to recruit well out there. He’s a good recruiter. His program has slipped at Clemson. It’s not embarrassing, but four losses is not the Clemson standard.”
Finebaum’s comments come after Texas A&M fired Jimbo Fisher on Sunday after the former Florida State head coach spent six years as the leader of the Aggies.
Finebaum hasn’t shied away from criticizing Swinney and the Tigers in the past, calling Clemson “the saddest story in college football” following the team’s loss to NC State in late October.
