Final year of DeAndre Hopkins’ contract extension is voidable

If the final year is voided, the extension is essentially worth nearly $40 million for one year.

The Arizona Cardinals and receiver DeAndre Hopkins agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $54.5 million in new money. It keeps him under contract with the Cardinals through the 2024 season.

Among other things, he has a no-trade clause and a clause prohibiting the Cardinals from using the franchise tag on him once his deal expires.

However, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Cardinals could potentially get out of the deal after 2023.

He appeared on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.

“The last year is actually voidable,” Rapoport said. “If that happens, this becomes a one-year extension worth nearly $40 million.”

This actually shed a little more light on the structure of the deal.

Based on numbers we have already seen from ESPN’s Josina Anderson, the Cardinals are paying Hopkins $20.1 million in new money through 2022.

That means his salary for 2023 is due to be more than $19 million and then he would be due about $14-$15 million in salary in 2024, potentially triggering an extension at that point.

The specific numbers for the signing bonus and cap hit breakdown aren’t quite known yet.
