FINAL: Texas gets the last laugh over Iowa State, 26-16

Steve Sarkisian taught Iowa State a valuable lesson. He who laughs last laughs best.

The Texas Longhorns beat the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday. It was close for three quarters, but the fourth quarter was all Texas.

For the first time in several years, Texas is overpowering opponents. The Longhorns bullied the Cyclones into submission and mercifully sat on the ball to end the game. Iowa State’s 0.4 yards per carry illustrate just how dominant Texas was in the game.

Offensively, several Longhorns broke loose. Running back CJ Baxter struggled early but found his footing with 117 rushing yards on 20 carries. His sure hands kept Texas from stalled drives and turnovers on the night.

Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington led receivers in the passing game. Worthy caught four passes for 77 yards while Whittington caught three passes for 56 yards and a touchdown that turned the game into a shootout.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers had a solid performance completing 23 of 33 passes for 281 yards and two touchdowns. The strong showing was keyed by a masterful coaching display in the second half.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian called one of his best second half performances of his tenure. He out-coached Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell with Campbell at his best. In addition, he had perhaps the best game management performance of his head coaching career.

Sarkisian had the Cyclones on the ropes for the majority of the second half landing several decisive punches and putting the game out of hand. Ultimately, the Longhorns’ better roster won out.

Iowa State falls to 6-5 and out of Big 12 contention while Texas improves to 10-1 and asserts itself as the Big 12 title favorite. The Longhorns will next take the field against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Friday, Nov. 24.
