It feels like so long ago that Chicago Bears coach Matt Nagy was at the top of his profession, but we’re just two seasons removed from Nagy winning the NFL’s Coach of the Year after flipping the Bears into a 12-4 playoff team in his first year on the job in 2018.
Now, after a disappointing 8-8 season in 2019 and a 2020 campaign that’s trending in the wrong direction, Nagy’s future in Chicago is on shaky ground.
At least, according to NBC Sports analyst Christ Simms it is.
“The pressure’s on in a big-time way, especially on the offensive side of the ball, their staff,” Simms said. “I think Matt Nagy and company are going to be fighting for their future to a degree, in some way, shape or form, down the stretch of the season. I’m not saying he’s on the hot seat to get fired, but if it collapses here down the stretch and they lose their last six games, then he is going to be in the hot seat, and he probably is going to get fired.”
This isn’t exactly earth-shattering stuff, but it’s still a sad state of affairs for a Bears organization that seemingly got it right in 2018 at two of the most important positions for a franchise to sustain success: head coach and quarterback.
It’s been a steady regression since then. Mitch Trubisky was benched this season for Nick Foles and Nagy’s surrendered playcalling duties to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor.
The Bears are slowly sinking into the abyss of football purgatory, and it might require wholesale changes — including at head coach — to get back on track.
