You’re waking up on Tuesday reading all that you can about the players that you should be picking up off the waiver wire as you prepare for Week 3 of fantasy football in 2020.
But it’s likely there aren’t as many things written about who you should be dropping to grab those players. That’s what this weekly column — keep ’em or dump ’em! — will hopefully answer for you: Some help in the debate over who you should keep or drop in order to improve your team.
Week 2 was filled with injuries, which means fantasy owners will be hitting the waiver wire hard. And that, in turn, means you have to figure out who to keep and who to drop. Let’s get to it.
1. TE Rob Gronkowski, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Here comes a hot take: I think he’s droppable after one target last week and three in Week 1. It’s mostly because tight end has suddenly become a super-deep position. Beyond the big names like Travis Kelce, George Kittle and Mark Andrews, there are breakouts aplenty with Jonnu Smith, Noah Fant, Mike Gesicki, Dallas Goedert and Hayden Hurst. There are also a lot of receivers in Tampa, so I’d be totally fine with dropping him.
VERDICT: Drop him
2. RB Chris Thompson, Jacksonville Jaguars
I’m on the fence. Last week, I said keep him. The usage has been low, especially with James Robinson taking the reins as the top back, but he scored in Week 2 and the Jags are going to throw a lot. In a less waiver-heavy week, I might feel differently, but if you need to get Mike Davis or one of the Giants’ backs, go ahead and let him go.
VERDICT: Drop him
3. WR Preston Williams, Miami Dolphins
The numbers aren’t great so far, but he faced Tre’Davious White last week and the Jags are coming up.
VERDICT: Keep him
4. WR Quintez Cephus, Detroit Lions
Coming off a 10-target day in Week 1, he went 3-of-3 for 54 yards, but what if Kenny Golladay is back?
VERDICT: Drop him
5. RB Peyton Barber, Washington Football Team
From 17 carries and a pair of scores in Week 1, to one carry against the Cardinals. Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic appear to be the Nos. 1 and 2 options. I’m fine with letting him go.
VERDICT: Drop him
6. RB Jordan Howard, Miami Dolphins
The good: he’s scored in each of the first two games. The bad: he’s only carried the ball 13 times and he’s been passed by Myles Gaskin and Matt Breida in terms of volume. Unfortunately, and especially in this RB environment, you have to keep him.
VERDICT: Keep him
7. QB Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles
Here is a partial list of QBs who have outscored Wentz so far: Philip Rivers, Teddy Bridgewater, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jared Goff, Derek Carr and Mitchell Trubisky. All of that said: go grab another QB, but keep Wentz on the bench.
VERDICT: Keep him
