Tua Tagovailoa is one of the biggest boom-or-bust players in fantasy football heading into the 2023 season. There are a lot of great surrounding pieces that could propel Tagovailoa into having a top-five fantasy quarterback season, but the difficulty of the AFC East and his injury history can not be understated.
The obvious downside to the Dolphins quarterback is the health concern and for fair reasons. Through three years in the league, he has never played a full 17-game season. The first two years he was in the league he was in and out of the lineup from various injuries to his ribs and thumb among other things.
However, it was his well-documented concussion history that was the cause for concern in 2022 and he missed four games as a result. They also play in probably the most difficult division in the NFL in the AFC East, but staying on the field will be the main concern for Tua and his fantasy supporters.
Assuming he can stay on the field, Tua has been a great option for the Dolphins as he has a 21-13 record as their starter. He is now entering Year 2 with head coach Mike McDaniel, who many consider to be an offensive savant. The formidable receiving duo of former Alabama teammate, Jaylen Waddle and future Hall of Famer, Tyreek Hill, will return in 2023, and many think they are the best in the game. Last season, the two combined for 194 receptions, 3,066 yards and 15 touchdowns, and with another year in the offense they will both take another step forward.
In most fantasy leagues, Tagovailoa has been around the 10th to the 12th quarterback picked and is a great option for guys who don’t prioritize selecting a high-end QB. Tagovailoa will have a few weeks where he puts up 30-point performances, but the looming question is will he be on the field come fantasy playoff time?
Roll Tide Wire will continue to break down a former Alabama player who is now in the NFL and assess their fantasy football value ahead of the 2023 season.
