Fans of the XFL’s DC Defenders tossed lemons on the field when security took away their beer cup snake

As the old saying goes, “When life takes away your beer snake, throw lemons.”

There are some injustices in this world that can be tolerated. For fans of the XFL’s DC Defenders, taking away the beer cup snake is not one of them.

The spring football league relaunched this past weekend after its short-lived revival in 2020 came to an end as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’s apparently a time-honored tradition for Defenders fans to stack their empty beer cups together.

But for whatever reason, the security staff at Audi Field wasn’t having it for Sunday night’s game against the Seattle Sea Dragons.

Big mistake.

The crowd launched into open rebellion during the third quarter, hurling lemons onto the field in retaliation.

You read that correctly. Lemons.

The passionate display apparently served as a catalyst for the trailing Defenders, who ended the game on a 14-0 run to earn a 22-18 victory in their season opener.

And if that wasn’t good enough, they’re now also protected from scurvy.
