Falcons expected to sign veteran defensive back Josh Thompson, per report

According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign veteran defensive back Josh Thompson to their 90-man roster. The 25-year-old has mostly been used as a special-teams gunner, appearing in six career games for the Tennessee Titans in 2022.

Thompson spent most of the 2023 season on the Titans practice squad before signing with the Houston Texans back in January. The Texans released him back in April and now he joins an Atlanta team that’s thin at the defensive back position.

Safety DeMarcco Hellams is out for the foreseeable future and the team just placed Harrison Hand on the injured reserve list on Sunday.

The Falcons are also working out veteran safety Justin Simmons, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Simmons, 30, made the Pro Bowl last season in Denver but was released by the team over the offseason.

Many consider Simmons to be the best free agent on the market. If Atlanta signs him, the former Broncos safety would join a secondary that already features Jessie Bates III and A.J. Terrell.
