Fake spike backfires as Bailey Zappe throws pick to seal Patriots’ loss to Colts

A fake spike backfired on the New England Patriots in a loss to the Colts

In theory, the fake spike seemed like a good idea.

It backfired on Sunday in Germany for the New England Patriots.

Faced with a desperation last drive to try and overcome a 10-6 deficit to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, Bill Belichick switched from Mac Jones to Bailey Zappe for the Patriots’ last drive.

The backup quarterback was instructed to try a fake spike to come up with a big play in the final minute.

Zappe executed the fake spike part but failed on the pass.

Rodney Thomas II was not fooled and picked off the errant pass.
