Fab Four: Selecting Michigan football’s Mount Rushmore of all-time recruits

On the eve of early signing day, Wolverines Wire recalls the most hyped commits in school history.

Without further ado, we start our main list off with the obvious: a consensus No. 1 recruit that was a can’t-miss prospect at the time he chose to come to Ann Arbor.

Gary is the undisputed king on this list.

How you feel about his production in Ann Arbor is one thing, but Gary — the Paramus (New Jersey) Catholic High School standout — was a consensus No. 1 overall recruit, regardless of position, according to all four major recruiting sites at the time (247Sports, Rivals, ESPN and the now-defunct Scout). He made his college decision on national signing day after Michigan had concluded its Signing of the Stars, the first of two signing day extravaganzas introducing the 2016 class. While he was long seen as a Wolverines lock, there was wavering in the final days, including a last-second visit to Clemson. However, he chose to wear maize and blue and subsequently had a three-year career wearing a winged helmet.

As the consensus No. 1 in 2016, Gary made 247Sports list of all-time top recruits, tied with Jadeveon Clowney, Robert Nkemdiche, Vince Young and Ernie Sims.

In his three years at Michigan, he compiled 119 tackles with 23 for loss and 9.5 sacks. He was selected No. 12 overall in the 2019 NFL draft by the Green Bay Packers, with whom he is a reserve linebacker.
