Ex-Celtics champion, assistant coach Sam Cassell a target for Houston Rockets’ head coaching gig

The 2008 Celtics champion could be the next head coach of the Rockets.

It seems former Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka is not the only former Celtic in the running to become the next head coach of the Houston Rockets. According to new reporting from the Houston Chronicle’s Jonathan Feigen, former Boston assistant coach and champion player Sam Cassell has been added to the Rockets’ list of targets after they parted ways with Stephen Silas.

“The Rockets on Thursday received permission to interview 76ers assistant coach Sam Cassell, one of the stars of their 1994 and 1995 championship teams,” shared Feigen. “Though the Rockets are not expected to interview as many candidates as in some of their previous searches, they expected to meet with roughly eight coaches in the initial phase of the search.”

Among the other candidates besides Udoka are former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel, ex-Charlotte Hornets coach James Borrego, Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin and Phoenix Suns assistant Kevin Young.

Per Feigen, Houston would also be interested in interviewing current Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse should he and that organization elect to part ways this offseason.
