The San Antonio Spurs have been thrust into the spotlight, and as long as Victor Wembanyama is on the team, that’s where they’ll remain, as he’s the magnet drawing it to them. The 19-year-old rookie hasn’t even played in an NBA game, and he’s already the center of attention around the NBA landscape.
Before he ever played even a Summer League game, people were forming lines outside the arenas in Las Vegas just for a chance to watch him play a meaningless game in the middle of July. He’s that much of a superstar. But with all the attention and hype comes an equal amount of hate.
Marilyn Dubinski of Pounding the Rock recently wrote an article urging everyone to “slow down” when it comes to Wembanyana, stating that the immense hate, and hype, need to be quelled for the time being.
“With hype comes haters, haters bring defenders who overhype everything all over again, and the cycle goes on and on.
The good news is Wemby has already proven himself to be mature enough to ignore all the distractions, good or bad, and that’s all that matters, because as long as the offseason drags on without any play to back up either side of the argument, all we will have is hot takes. It is summertime, after all,” Dubinski wrote.
As Dubinski noted, the youngster has been able to ignore most of the attention, which is a useful skill to have. But he’s still a kid. This amount of attention is bound to break through and get to him, regardless of how well he handles it.
Maybe it’s time to slow down and let Wembanyama breathe for a couple of months because once the season starts, that won’t be an option.
