Everson Griffen among 4 vet free agents for the Cowboys to consider

There are still some veterans in free agency who can help the Dallas Cowboys for the 2020 season.

Wide Receiver Taylor Gabriel

Drafting WR CeeDee Lamb was a huge gift for the Cowboys, who needed WR help. Lamb gives Dallas arguably the best receiver group in the NFL. The offense will use their top three receivers in a multitude of ways, but they still have a need for a small, shifty WR. Gabriel fits the bill perfectly as a guy who can get open quickly on the underneath routes.

He had 96 receptions across 25 games catching passes from the Bears’ Mitch Trubisky.

As good as the Big 3 are, the Cowboys don’t have much lined up behind them. Adding a fourth receiver in Gabriel’s mold makes sense.

Safety Reshad Jones

One of the few positions the Cowboys didn’t address in the draft was safety, which is why Jones makes sense. He didn’t have an interception last season, but he does have 21 in his 10-year career, so he is someone who can help cause turnovers.

He also has six return touchdowns.

Head coach Mike McCarthy mentioned the possibility of moving one of the club’s corners to safety, but adding Jones would eliminate that necessity. It’s not easy to pick-up a new position after playing another one for years and the best way to not allow that to happen is to sign a quality safety like Jones.

Quarterback Cam Newton

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

It’s highly unlikely Newton is ready to sign to be a back-up like Jameis Winston just did with New Orleans, but his options are drying up and the Cowboys have a major need behind starting QB Dak Prescott. Cooper Rush cannot be counted on if he had to play meaningful snaps, the club took a flyer on intriguing JMU thrower Ben DiNucci and Newton would give the team a great chance if Prescott got injured.

It’s also unlikely that Prescott doesn’t sign his franchise tag, but if the team wants an insurance policy in case he doesn’t, Newton is the best option talent-wise for Dallas, though the juice might not be worth the squeeze with the circus that would surround the dynamic of an MVP joining the team without a long-term deal in place for Prescott.
