Cleaning house can be costly. The Raiders new regime went about remaking the team in their chosen image and in the process racked up a league high $29.4 million in dead money according to overthecap.com.
The latest dead money to be added to the team tally comes from the release of Derek Carr.
GM Dave Ziegler signed Carr to an extension prior to last season which came with $25 million guaranteed at signing. Of that, $5.6 million remains, and that amount — added to their previous $24 million — moves the Raiders past the Carolina Panthers ($28.4 million) for most dead money in the league.
On the other hand, Carr’s release *also* saves the Raiders $30 million on their cap right now and another $5 million off next year’s cap.
For that reason, despite their league-leading dead money, the Raiders *still* currently possess the third most cap space in the league.
Currently the Raiders sit at $48.4 million in available cap room. Only the Bears ($94.4M) and ($56.5M) have more.
