Round 1 of the 2022 NFL draft is set to kick off on Thursday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. CT.
The Kansas City Chiefs have two picks in the first round of the draft, but they won’t be picking anytime close to the start time. Both of the Chiefs’ first-round picks come back-to-back in the latter half of the draft. Outside of a trade scenario where the team is moving up in the draft, Chiefs fans will be spending a good portion of the night waiting for other teams to make their selections en route to the bottom of the first round.
In the first round, each team gets 10 minutes on the clock before they need to turn in their selection. If a team doesn’t make a selection in the allotted amount of time, they essentially forfeit their draft slot to the following team and make a selection one pick later. Albeit it rare circumstance, this has happened before and as recently as 2011 with the Baltimore Ravens. In the case of the Chiefs, this shouldn’t be something they need to worry about seeing as they pick back-to-back in Round 1.
Below you’ll find estimated times for when K.C. will be on the clock for each of their two first-round draft slots should things go according to schedule. These estimations are based on pick times from the 2021 NFL draft, when the Packers picked Eric Stokes and the Bills picked Gregory Rousseau.
Round 1, Pick No. 29: 10:40 p.m. CT.
Round 1, Pick No. 30: 10:50 p.m. CT.
