As players, fans and media all got their first look at New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac  Jones, writers in particular are starting to get a sense of his potential.

Being the No. 15 overall selection in April, Jones carries with him a lot of expectations. ESPN’s Mike Reiss noted what he noticed most about the former Alabama star. In particular, Reiss was impressed with how much  Jones has been able to handle as he tries to navigate the complex Patriots offense.

As Reiss notes, Jones has been able to step into the role of backup quarterback quite seamlessly for New England over the past couple of weeks.

“Jones took No. 2 reps behind Cam Newton throughout the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp, and he accounted well for himself throughout all spring practices. The Patriots are throwing a lot at him, and seeing how he responds. Teammates are impressed.”

It will be interesting to see if Jones can parlay his good performance into a bona fide push for the starting quarterback position.
