ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Notre Dame great odds in College Football Playoff

ESPN is high on the Irish in the CFP

Now that the first-round of the College Football Playoff has been played, ESPN has updated its Football Power Index and it is pretty favorable for Notre Dame.

The Irish are the No. 3 ranked team according to the data, as they fell one spot after this past weekend. Texas and Ohio State are the top 2, but Notre Dame only trails the Longhorns in the most likely probability to make the National Championship game.

At almost 40%, 37.7, the FPI believes that the Irish can continue to make a run at winning a title. Texas has a 47% chance to reach the final game of the year. They also lead in percentage to win it all, with 27.2%, while Notre Dame is second at 20%.

Looking at the Irish’s next opponent in Georgia, the FPI gives the Bulldogs at 27.2% chance to make the championship game, but a 12.9% odds to win the crown.

It’s odd that the computer data doesn’t favor Oregon, as the No. 1 seed has a 18% chance to reach the championship game and just 7.7% to win. While FPI is a solid indicator of what could come to pass, that’s why they play the games.

Notre Dame will get back on the field on New Year’s Day, as they’ll battle with the Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl for a spot in the CFP semifinals.
