The NFL draft is over and now teams can turn their focus to training camp and the upcoming 2020 season, which hopefully will get underway without a hitch.
With the NFL set to release their schedule on Thursday night, the season is starting to feel closer than ever. And for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 2020 will mark the beginning of a new era as six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady will be taking over the reigns of an offense that ranked tied for third in scoring last season.
After landing Brady and making away with a strong haul in the 2020 draft, the Bucs are in good shape to make a run at the playoffs next season. And in their latest power rankings, ESPN has the Bucs cracking the top 10, coming in at No. 7, with Brady being named the Tampa Bay player who benefited most from the team’s draft.
Per Jenna Laine:
“The Bucs got the 42-year-old quarterback one of the top tackles in the draft, Tristan Wirfs; he can start at right tackle from Day 1. They also added Ke’Shawn Vaughn, a complete back and strong pass-blocker; dynamic receiver Tyler Johnson, who was a steal in the fifth round; and speedy running back Raymond Calais. And they did all this without neglecting their defense. Plus, they used their fourth-round pick to trade for Rob Gronkowski on the eve of the draft, so that counts, right?”
The Bucs aren’t building for the future, they are building for the here and now. As Laine points out, Brady is 42, but will be 43 when the season starts. Getting him as much talent as possible will only help the Bucs’ chances of success. But, again, until this team is able to get on the field and work together, they are just paper champions. Let’s hope they’ll be able to start training camp on time.
