The NFL is going to have some studying to do this offseason. New rules are coming.
The most-jarring one relates to kickoffs.
During voting at the annual league meeting, the NFL has adopted a low-impact kickoff, modeled on what has previously been used in the XFL. The hope is to quell some injury concerns.
The new rule will have 10 players on the kicking team and at least nine players on the receiving team now line up five yards apart. They won’t begin running until the ball gets back to the returner.
Can you envision it in your head? If not, no worries. ESPN released this video helping break it all down:
Huge changes coming to the NFL kickoff: Owners have voted to go with a new format for kicks, per sources. I explain what that means for the kickoff here… it’s going to look VERY different. pic.twitter.com/c2WDjdV0iY
