Coming off of a national championship, not many are giving Michigan football much of a chance at a repeat. Part of it is the talent it lost, the other is the talent that teams around it has accumulated in a reshifting college football atmosphere.
Yet, some of the questions this offseason have been answered.
With a new coaching staff, the defense looks to be as good as its predecessor. Wink Martindale, the longtime NFL defensive guru, takes the reins, and though the secondary appeared depleted, the Wolverines leaned on the transfer portal for some high-end additions.
Thus, the questions come on offense, where Donovan Edwards steps in for Blake Corum. the offensive line is set to have new names leading the charge, and the quarterback position is up for grabs this fall. But ESPN says that Michigan football’s biggest question mark this fall comes at wide receiver.
Question mark: Wide receiver
The Wolverines have a wide-open quarterback competition heading into the fall, but they also have big questions at receiver. All-American tight end Colston Loveland will ease the pressure on the receivers. Tyler Morris, who only had 13 catches last season, will need to have a big year as the headliner of a relatively unproven group that includes Semaj Morgan, Fredrick Moore, Kendrick Bell and Youngstown State transfer C.J. This comes days after ESPN proclaimed that the biggest X-factor for the Wolverines is wide receiver Tyler Morris.
Yes, there are questions at receiver and it’s likely the position group we have the least amount of confidence in entering the season. However, those in the room will tell anyone who will listen that the talent is there, even if it doesn’t receive the hype that other units (internally and externally) may get.
