The Bears have no shortage of needs this offseason if they hope to reverse their misfortunes that came with a disappointing 2019 season.
Most of those needs fall on the offensive side of the ball, and finding stability at the quarterback position remains near the top of the list. Mitchell Trubisky regressed in his third season, and his future beyond 2020 is well in doubt.
ESPN examined the biggest offseason need for every NFL team, and it’s not a surprise that they have the Bears landing an experienced veteran quarterback to push Trubisky.
Chicago general manager Ryan Pace already committed to Trubisky as the Week 1 starter in 2020, but the Bears have to find better fallback options than Chase Daniel or Tyler Bray. Look for Chicago to either trade for or sign a proven No. 2 such as Andy Dalton or Marcus Mariota when the new league year begins. The Bears can’t afford to waste another season waiting for Trubisky — the second overall pick of the 2017 draft — to develop. It’s now or never.
The Bears remain publicly committed to Trubisky as their starting quarterback, but that doesn’t mean much in February. Chicago has no choice but to bring in veteran competition for Trubisky this offseason, with Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray set to his free agency. It would be ill-advised to bring them back when they need to have insurance for Trubisky if things go wrong.
Ultimately, general manager Ryan Pace’s actions will speak louder than his words when it comes to the quarterback position. Trubisky might ultimately end up starting in 2020, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll finish the season if things go south.
