As the 2020 NFL season comes to a close, the Atlanta Falcons have some major, franchise-defining decisions to make regarding the future of the team. Finding a new general manager and head coach are near the top of the list.
ESPN.com analysts Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano released an article predicting who the next Falcons head coach will be. With several up-and-coming candidates to choose from, the ESPN duo went with a veteran head coach with plenty of experience.
“Lots of ways the Falcons can go, but let’s give them the candidate with the most experience establishing and maintaining a consistent culture. [Marvin] Lewis with a team that does run as “quirky” as the Bengals do. I think he’s a strong choice.”
Lewis is a proven coach that both Fowler and Graziano felt would avoid the “unpredictable” play-calling of Arthur Smith, Joe Brady or Kevin O’Connell. All three are offensive coordinators for their current respective teams.
Lewis is the co-defensive coordinator for the Herm Edwards-led Arizona State Sun Devils. During his time as the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, Lewis guided the team to seven playoff appearances and six double-digit win seasons.
However, if the Falcons were to actually select Lewis as the next head coach, it is likely the team will receive immense backlash as fans have a heightened desire for a young, offensive-minded head coach.
