ESPN predicts Mitchell Trubisky as Colts’ 2022 starter

ESPN’s Field Yates makes the case for Mitchell Trubisky as the Colts’ starting QB in 2022.

With the new league year just two weeks away, predictions as to where quarterbacks will be playing in 2022 are coming out of the woodwork. Considering their current situation, the Indianapolis Colts have one of the more intriguing storylines at the position.

Though the Colts are “still working through” their decision on the future quarterback Carson Wentz, most believe there is too much smoke to think he’ll be back wearing the horseshoe for another season.

In predicting the starting quarterbacks for every team in the NFL for the 2022 season, Field Yates of ESPN has Wentz going to the Washington Commanders.

As for Wentz’s replacement, Yates chose another former No. 2 overall pick in Mitchell Trubisky.

“It feels like a matter of when, not if, Wentz will be released by the Colts, ending a disappointing union that has cost draft capital that prevents them from being as serious a suitor for another top-flight quarterback this offseason (on top of the financial ramifications of the Wentz deal).

Is Trubisky perfect? Far from it. But what the Colts would aim to do is lighten the load of Trubisky with a once-again dominant running game and a defense that can cause chaos. The price would not be significant, and there’s enough upside to explore.”

After spending the majority of four seasons as the starter for the Chicago Bears (2017-2020), Trubisky failed to reach a level of consistency that would have earned him another contract.

So for the entirety of the 2021 season, Trubisky served as the backup quarterback to Josh Allen with the Buffalo Bills.

Though Trubisky doesn’t offer much in the way of championship-level upside, he would be a fine stopgap for one season while the Colts continued their search for a long-term option. But no one would be blamed for a lack of excitement if he did become the starter.

The Colts have options to seek if Wentz is truly gone this offseason and if they look toward free agency, Trubisky is likely to be one of the top options.
