ESPN has Iowa football’s offense trending upwards

Tim Lester and the Iowa Hawkeyes have life on offense. ESPN has the group among those trending upwards at this point in the season.

There was hope that Tim Lester would be able to infuse life and fun into the Iowa Hawkeyes when he was hired as the offensive coordinator. What he is doing is more than that. He has Iowa scoring in bunches.

What Tim Lester is doing is a stark contrast from the dark days Iowa endured over the previous years of struggling to simply gain first downs. His improvement of the offense has made this team fun once again.

After the 42-10 romping of Wisconsin, Iowa posted 40 or more points for their third straight home game. That sort of performance has Iowa among ESPN’s items trending up at this point in the college football season.

Trending up: Points for Iowa

Iowa trounced Wisconsin 42-10 on Saturday, crossing an unlikely threshold in the process.

Iowa has scored 277 points this year, or one-and-a-half Brian Ferentzes, if you’re keeping track at home. More troubling, the Hawkeyes are averaging just four punts per game, which may be a violation of the Geneva Convention.

It should be noted, however, that Iowa has scored 111 more points through nine games than it did last year, but it has lost one more game than it had at this point last season. So let that be a lesson to you, Florida State. Be careful wishing for too much offense. – Daivd Hale, ESPN

Last year, Iowa averaged 15.4 points per game. They are averaging double that at 30.8 points per game this year. Iowa has scored 40 points four times this year and at least 30 points in six of nine games.

The Hawkeyes have scored 33 offensive touchdowns this year through nine games compared to just 20 total touchdowns last year. Kaleb Johnson has as many rushing touchdowns this season as Iowa did as a team all of last year.

Iowa is nearly doubling its rushing output as well. Last year they ran for 115.9 yards per game. This season, Iowa is bulldozing its way to 222.3 rushing yards per game.

However you want to shake it, Iowa is a new team on offense under Tim Lester and is moving the ball and points up points better than many could have imagined.
