The Philadelphia 76ers will convene in Camden, NJ for training camp on Sept. 28 to fully prepare for the 2021-22 season and at this point, their moves are almost complete. They made their free agency additions and they took care of an important piece.
While they still do have to figure out what to do with Ben Simmons–and it appears that Simmons’ time in Philadelphia will be coming to an end–the Sixers are still a strong bunch. Even if Simmons suits up on opening night in New Orleans, the Sixers will be an interesting team to watch.
Amongst their decisions, they brought in Andre Drummond and Georges Niang in free agency, they re-signed Furkan Korkmaz and Danny Green, and they drafted a young 3-and-D option in Jaden Springer.
ESPN began grading the offseason moves from the Eastern Conference teams and Kevin Pelton gave the team a solid B+:
So far, I’ve liked the Sixers’ offseason. They brought back starter Danny Green on a contract that guarantees him just $10 million for one year and also got reasonable value in free agency with reserves Furkan Korkmaz (re-signed for three years and $15 million) and Georges Niang (two years, $7 million). Adding Andre Drummond for the veteran’s minimum to back up Joel Embiid was an easy call given the price.
Of course, the biggest decision for Philadelphia remains a possible Ben Simmons trade. The decision on whether to trade Simmons now and what to prioritize in return will end up far more important in the long run than any move the 76ers have made to date.
At this point, all eyes are on Simmons. The Sixers have a big decision to make as training camp approaches and they have to decide whether to move him and avoid any potential awkwardness around the team or they wait it out and see what kind of return they can get for one of the game’s brighter stars.
